41st Street to Beach Drive Water Main Project
Consor Engineering consultants was hired to help us explore options for locating the additional water supply line to the area. After investigating multiple scenarios, they recommended connecting the existing water main on 41st Street with the water main on Beach Drive, and our Board agreed this was the most efficient and cost effective approach. The construction project was awarded to B&B Utilities and Excavating in 2024.
Project Schedule:
After lengthy delays in receiving a permit from King County Parks for crossing the Burke Gilman Trail, the project is finally expected to start the week of August 11, 2025.
During the week of August 11: live water tap connections will be made on each of the two existing watermains, one on 41st Ave NE and one on Beach Drive NE. Each road will remain open while the taps are made, and the pipe is placed within the road. While work is happening within each road, there will be one lane of traffic, and a flagger will direct traffic to keep traffic flowing.
During the week of August 18: the contractor will focus on getting the waterline across the Burke-Gilman Trail and getting this section paved. Again, the trail will remain open to the public although trail users are requested to slow down while crews are working in the trail.
During the week of August 25: the contractor will be working on the waterline down the grassy slope and making connections to the work already completed.
During the final week: the contractor will be taking the final steps to complete the project.
Scope of Work:
This project will connect the current water main on NE 41st Street (16709 NE 41st Street) to the east—across the grassy slope and the Burke-Gilman Trail—to the current waterline on Beach Drive NE (16532 Beach Dr NE). We will be installing an 8” Ductile Iron (DI) waterline and making connections to two 6” Cast Iron (CI) waterlines that were installed in 1952. The District plans to upgrade those 6” CI waterlines with 8” DI as part of a future capital improvement project.
During the days when work is being done within the trail, bike and pedestrian traffic will remain open, but the trail will be narrowed. Please use caution if using the trail. We are working with King County Parks to notify trail users ahead of any work being done that will affect trail users.
The work on 41st Avenue NE and on Beach Drive NE will always maintain one lane of traffic and the contractor will only be working on one street at a time to keep traffic interruptions to a minimum.
